Getting there

Don't forget that the Community Service van is available for all WPI students for co-curricular volunteer opportunities.  Students can request the van here.  The CS Van is available daily from 9:00am to 6:00pm with detailed availability listed in the form link.  If you have accessibility questions about van transportation, please contact gr-sao@wpi.edu.

After-School Program Tutors and Facilitators of Enrichment Activities are needed.

Provide tutoring and facilitate enrichment activities for Elementary students at two different locations (Clark Street Elementary and Roosevelt Elementary).

This opportunity qualifies for Federal Work Study.

Grades: Kindergarten - 6th grade
Hours: 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Days: Mondays - Fridays (WPI students choose day/s that work for their schedule)
WPI students must complete a Fingerprint and CORI Form.

ASSISTments, a free online math teaching tool developed at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, has given teachers the confidence to transition seamlessly between online and in-person classes amidst the uncertainty of instructional environments mid-COVID-19. This flexibility resulted in massive growth during the shift to distance learning this spring, and in big strategic changes for the ASSISTments team in order to best support teachers and students in all learning environments as they go back to school this fall.

Abby's House: Thrift Store

The Abby’s House Thrift Shop has three goals:

1. Provide a clean, welcoming store that is stocked with quality, affordable clothing, necessities and household goods for the community and to women who qualify for assistance through our voucher program. To learn more about obtaining a Thrift Shop voucher, please visit our advocacy page.

2. Continue to raise funds for our mission of providing safe shelter, affordable housing and advocacy services homeless, battered, and low-income women, with or without children, through the sale of items in our Thrift Store.

3. Always treat our customers with dignity and respect and assist them in every way we can.

Volunteers assist with accepting and sorting donations, stocking the shop floor, helping customers find the perfect outfit and working at the cash registers. Hours are very flexible. Some volunteers work a couple of hours a week, others a couple of days a week. Our hours have changed due to the pandemic and are now Monday through Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Saturday’s 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Thrift Shop Volunteers currently needed on:
Monday and Wednesday 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Thursday 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. In fact, they are the legs, arms, and brains, too. They are essential to our success and, as much as they give to ACE, ACE gives back to them. Working with our students will change their lives… and yours.

Volunteer positions are available from one up to five days a week in our After School, Saturday, and Summer Programs. Volunteers provide tutoring, behavioral assistance, mentoring, and friendship to our students.

Hours are from 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM Monday–Thursday and 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM on Saturdays and volunteer commitments start with as little as two hours a week.

ASSISTments at WPI

ASSISTments, a free online math teaching tool developed at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, has given teachers the confidence to transition seamlessly between online and in-person classes amidst the uncertainty of instructional environments mid-COVID-19. This flexibility resulted in massive growth during the shift to distance learning this spring, and in big strategic changes for the ASSISTments team in order to best support teachers and students in all learning environments as they go back to school this fall.

Abby's House: Thrift Store

The Abby’s House Thrift Shop has three goals:

1. Provide a clean, welcoming store that is stocked with quality, affordable clothing, necessities and household goods for the community and to women who qualify for assistance through our voucher program. To learn more about obtaining a Thrift Shop voucher, please visit our advocacy page.

2. Continue to raise funds for our mission of providing safe shelter, affordable housing and advocacy services homeless, battered, and low-income women, with or without children, through the sale of items in our Thrift Store.

3. Always treat our customers with dignity and respect and assist them in every way we can.

Volunteers assist with accepting and sorting donations, stocking the shop floor, helping customers find the perfect outfit and working at the cash registers. Hours are very flexible. Some volunteers work a couple of hours a week, others a couple of days a week. Our hours have changed due to the pandemic and are now Monday through Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Saturday’s 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Thursday 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Anne Rafferty's Empowerment Center

Annette Rafferty Women's Empowerment Center
Our Women’s Center is open to current and former guests and residents, serving as a space where women go to find continued support, camaraderie, and services. Individuals with specialized skills and/or training are always needed to teach workshops or provide services.

Examples of activities include:

Art and Music Therapy
Sewing/knitting and jewelry classes
Haircuts
Dental Hygiene
Pet Therapy
Computer Classes
Resume Development
Interview Preparation
Financial Literacy Training
SNAP Benefits Counseling
The Women Center is open daily from 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday – Friday and all programming takes place during these hours.

We are located at 93 Piedmont Street in Worcester, Massachusetts.
We offer dinners on weekdays from 5pm-6:30pm. When you arrive, enter through the Piedmont Street driveway and knock on the front door.
Please arrive 15 minutes early the first time you volunteer.
Volunteers must be at least 10 years old. Volunteers under 18 need adult supervision. Everyone, including minors, must sign up below.
